Our Story

From Mama's Cottage Mushrooms to Enchanted Earth

The seeds of Enchanted Earth were planted in a moment of spiritual guidance. When Matt noticed his father developing signs of dementia, he asked for help beyond the conventional. The answer came unexpectedly during a visit to a permaculture project with his men’s group – a tray of freshly grown Lion’s Mane mushrooms appeared before him, the very fungus known to support brain health and cognitive function.

This synchronicity sparked a journey. When Matt and Kate’s paths merged, they began growing mushrooms in Matt’s garage, initially selling fresh varieties before crafting their first medicines. Word spread quickly through their local community in Ludlow, and soon they found themselves at markets where people were drawn to both their remedies and the authentic connection they offered.

What started as Mama’s Cottage Mushrooms blossomed rapidly, almost too quickly to maintain balance. With production happening across two households while Kate homeschooled her children, they reached a crossroads. They needed stronger foundations to sustain their vision of reconnecting people with nature’s healing wisdom.

This recognition led to the rebirth as Enchanted Earth – a name that captures their deep reverence for the natural world as a living, conscious system that offers healing when approached with respect. This evolution allows them to reach more people while staying true to the heart and soul that made their remedies special from the beginning – genuine care, quality ingredients, and ancient wisdom brought into modern life.

Meet Kate & Matt

Kate’s journey with natural healing began in childhood. Suffering from copper poisoning as a young girl, she was cured through her mother’s natural approach rather than conventional medicine. Raised with homeopathy, herbs, and home-grown vegetables as the norm, Kate also grew up in a family steeped in spiritual practices including transmediumship.

Matt walks the path of alchemy, blending spiritual guidance with precise technique in creating medicines. His personal journey includes overcoming significant health challenges and addictions, giving him profound empathy for those seeking healing. He approaches mushroom cultivation and medicine-making as sacred acts, guided by both ancient texts and intuitive connection with the fungi themselves.

Together, they bring complementary energies to Enchanted Earth – Kate’s nurturing, educational approach balances Matt’s alchemical wisdom, creating space for various types of healing. They notice that at markets, some customers gravitate toward Kate while others connect with Matt, allowing different needs to be met through their combined presence.

The Spagyric Journey: From Earth to Elixir

Our medicine-making follows an ancient alchemical path called spagyrics – a word rarely heard in modern wellness circles yet representing one of the most complete approaches to plant medicine. This process honours the three essential elements that alchemists recognise in all living things: spirit, soul, and body.

The modern wellness industry has fractured this wholeness, separating and monetising different plant components – selling essential oils, tinctures, and extracts as distinct products. We see this as both less effective and misaligned with nature’s integrative design. Our spagyric approach reunites these elements, creating medicine that addresses your physical symptoms while supporting emotional balance and spiritual wellbeing.

  • Step 1: Intentional Sourcing
  • Step 2: Preparation with Presence
  • Step 3: Extracting the Spirit
  • Step 4: Unleashing Fire's Wisdom
  • Step 5: Crystalline Transformation
  • Step 6: Sacred Reunion
Step 1: Intentional Sourcing

Our medicine begins with relationships. We form connections with suppliers from Ecuador to Siberia to local mushroom growers, having conversations that go beyond transactions to understand their values and growing methods. This care ensures that only ethically harvested and properly identified plants and fungi enter our remedies.

With ceremonial cacao, we've traced our supply all the way to indigenous Ashaninka tribes in Peru, where family farms along the Ene river harvest vibrant pods by hand. This commitment to ethical sourcing sometimes means paying more, but it ensures both quality medicine and fair compensation for those doing the work.

Step 2: Preparation with Presence

Before we begin extraction, we centre ourselves. Experience has taught us that our state of mind flows directly into the medicine - there have been times after upsetting interactions when we simply couldn't make remedies for days because the energy wasn't right. The plants and fungi respond to our intention, requiring us to approach them with clarity and respect.

This isn't mystical thinking but practical experience - when we force the process or work without proper focus, problems arise. Equipment breaks, batches fail, and the medicines simply don't have the same efficacy. Creating remedies with ceremonial attention is both art and necessity.

Step 3: Extracting the Spirit

Using organic ethanol and water, we draw out the medicinal compounds - what alchemists call the "spirit" of the plant. Ethanol acts as a universal solvent, extracting virtually all beneficial components including those that aren't water-soluble. For our alcohol-free products, we later remove this ethanol through careful distillation, preserving all medicinal benefits.

This differs significantly from making simple tinctures, which anyone can create by soaking herbs in alcohol. Our process involves specific techniques, timing aligned with natural cycles, and attention to subtle energetic qualities that distinguish true spagyric preparations.

Step 4: Unleashing Fire's Wisdom

We introduce sacred fire to the remaining plant material, reducing it to ash through calcination. This step separates "light from dark" in the ash, revealing hidden mineral components that conventional extraction misses entirely. Few producers perform this labour-intensive step, yet it's crucial to our medicine's efficacy.

This process connects to ancient understanding of transformation- just as fire can purify and reveal what's essential, this burning away of the superficial leaves only what truly matters. The white ash that eventually emerges contains concentrated mineral wisdom.

Step 5: Crystalline Transformation

From seemingly inert ash emerges something remarkable - white crystals that represent the "body" of the plant. These mineral salts act as catalysts, activating the previously extracted compounds to their full potential. This step distinguishes true spagyric preparations from common tinctures or extracts.

The crystals contain essential trace minerals that the plant has accumulated during its life - elements that support your body's own natural processes. Without these minerals, the medicine works only partially; with them, healing reaches deeper levels.

Step 6: Sacred Reunion

Finally, we reunite all three elements - spirit, soul, and body- creating a complete medicine that resonates with your whole being. For our glycerin-based remedies, we carefully distill out the ethanol (recapturing it for future use) and rehydrate with vegetable glycerin, making powerful plant medicine accessible to everyone, including those who prefer to avoid alcohol.

This completed medicine contains the full spectrum of the plant's healing potential - not just isolated compounds but the intricate symphony of elements working in harmony, just as they do in nature. The result is medicine that supports true healing rather than merely suppressing symptoms.
